Bondi Sands joins growing list of companies to recall sunscreen products over SPF concerns

Cult beauty brand Bondi Sands has become the latest of a string of companies to pull sunscreen products from Australian shelves over concerns about their effectiveness.

In agreement with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the company today recalled five specific batches of two of its mineral sunscreen products due to inadequate SPF protection concerns.

The impacted products are:

  • Bondi Sands Zinc Mineral Broad Spectrum UVA & UVB Protection Sunscreen SPF 50+ Face Lotion 60ml, batch numbers GC032084 and 4843
  • Bondi Sands Zinc Mineral Broad Spectrum UVA & UVB Protection Sunscreen SPF 50+ Body Lotion 120ml batch numbers GC032114, GC063314 and 4844

Bondi Sands has recalled specific batches of two of its Zinc Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+ Face and Body Lotions. (TGA)

The impacted products may have an uneven texture and “visible water separating out of the product”, which could affect their quality and/or effectiveness, Bondi Sands said in a statement.

Separation may cause changes to the SPF rating of the product, which could result in inadequate sun protection, the TGA added.

“Customers who have purchased this sunscreen are advised to return the product to the place of purchase for a replacement or full refund, or contact info@bondisands.com.au with any questions,” a Bondi Sands spokesperson said.

“Bondi Sands regrets any inconvenience to our customers.”

More than 20 sunscreens have been pulled from shelves over SPF claim concerns, according to the TGA.Concern was sparked in June, when a Choice report claimed that more than a dozen sunscreens “failed” to meet their own SPF claims when independently tested.

Bondi Sands products were not included on that list.
