Canucks’ Quinn Hughes ruled out vs. Hurricanes

Already dealing with the loss of their top goaltender, the Vancouver Canucks will be without their captain once again.

Defenceman Quinn Hughes has been ruled out for Friday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes (Sportsnet and Sportsnet+, 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT) with an undisclosed injury, the team announced.

Hughes was originally listed as a game-time decision but did not join the team for on-ice warmups before the game. He was, however, on the ice at the team’s optional skate earlier in the day.

The 26-year-old has already missed four games this season with a lower-body injury. He briefly exited Tuesday’s 5-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets after suffering an upper-body injury while taking a penalty, but did return.

In 14 games on the season, the blueliner has one goal and 12 assists. The Canucks, however, sit second-last in the Pacific Division at 8-9-1 for 17 points.

Demko was placed on injured reserve by the team on Friday. Defenceman Victor Mancini was activated from IR in a corresponding move.
