In Just 1 Day, Jamie Lee Curtis’ ‘Heartfelt’ & ‘Joyful’ Sequel Dethrones MCU Hit on Disney+

The newly released Freakier Friday didn’t take long to end The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ streaming dominance. In just one day, the body swap comedy ended the superhero film’s run.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps welcomed superhero fans into a brand-new era as it kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Six on July 25. The new entry, which was MCU’s first take on Marvel’s First Family, received positive reviews and had a decent run at the box office before premiering on Disney+ on Nov 5. Per FlixPatrol, it didn’t enjoy the top of the charts for too long because Freakier Friday is here to steal its thunder.

The sequel to the 2003 cult classic Freaky Friday, Freakier Friday premiered on Disney+ on Nov. 12, several months after its Aug. 8 debut. The sequel swiftly took the streaming charts by surprise. One day later, it was already the No. 1 film in 12 territories. It took two days for FlixPatrol to fully update for all territories, and Freakier Friday became a hit in 61 of them.

That came to the detriment of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which fell behind after spending only a full week at the top of the charts, including the U.S. However, the competition between the two newly-released films is just getting started, with both having what it takes to fight for the top spot.

Freakier Friday brought back Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as Tess and Anna. Over two decades later, the film saw them switch bodies again, this time, even further, as Anna’s daughter and her soon-to-be-stepdaughter are also involved.

The 2003 original is a cult classic, but it’s nowhere near perfect. The body-swap comedy was a product of its time, and it had its own problematic themes. The original featured an 88% approval score from the critics, alongside a Certified Fresh badge, but only a 58% score from the audience on the Popcornmeter. However, its impact continued, enough to receive a sequel.

The sequel also divided the critics and audiences, but scored enough positive reviews for both Certified Fresh and Verified Hot badges. From the former, it features a 74% rating, while the latter gave the sequel an even more enthusiastic 91% rating.

The audience consensus for Freakier Friday noted it’s “Steeped in nostalgia and bursting with good, clean fun, Freakier Friday is a heartfelt celebration of family, with Curtis and Lohan serving up all the cozy, freaky feels.”

A review praises it for being “Very funny, entertaining and joyful!” noting “Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have great chemistry together again and it brings a lot of memories for my millennial heart!”
