No. 1 Nebraska volleyball heads out west for two-match stretch in Los Angeles, starting with a Friday after dark clash with the UCLA Bruins. The Huskers are 24-0 for the second time in three years; the 2023 team started 27-0.
Nebraska took set one despite a rough start. Both teams struggled on offense, hitting under .000 for nearly half the set. But the Huskers got going, finishing the set hitting .250 and earning 13 kills. UCLA finished .000 with seven kills. The Bruins responded shortly after, taking the lead and holding it for a majority of the second set.
Nebraska once again battled back, jumping in front of UCLA right before entering the redzone and taking the set 25-23. The Bruins finally got over the hump in set three, however, taking a 25-19 win and ending the Huskers’ streaks.
The Huskers now begin set four hitting .267 with 39 kills. The Bruins stand at .253 with 43 kills. Rebekah Allick and Harper Murray lead the way for Nebraska, each tallying 10 kills on the night. Andi Jackson is also 8-of-11 in the match with no errors.
Nebraska tallied 15 consecutive sweeps and 48 straight set wins, both the most in program history since 2007. The Huskers’ offense also ranks first in the nation on offense with a .348 hitting percentage. The defense also now ranks first nationally in opponent hitting percentage with a .122.
UCLA is 14-10 overall and 8-6 in conference. The Bruins are coming in fresh off a five-set victory over Northwestern and are currently riding a three-match winning streak at home. UCLA, however, stands with a .219 hitting percentage, but are holding opponents to .190.
Nebraska is 14-5 against UCLA, winning the last five. The Bruins last defeated the Huskers back in 2009. Now the two teams face each other for just the second time in conference play. Nebraska defeated UCLA 3-1 in its first Big Ten matchup last season.
Nebraska’s streak comes to an end with 15 straight sweeps and 48 straight set wins.
The Bruins continue to keep Nebraska at bay and hold 40 kills on the night.
