Greece vs Scotland preview

Scotland’s 2022 World Cup dream ended with a playoff defeat to Ukraine at Hampden Park and assistant coach Steven Naismith described their upcoming qualifiers against Greece and Denmark as “effectively a playoff before the playoffs”.

Naismith’s words may not calm the nerves of the Tartan Army before the clash with Greece, who beat the Scots 3-1 on aggregate in March’s Nations League promotion/relegation playoff.

However, home advantage has counted for little in the first three meetings between these teams in 2025 and Scotland look a big price to beat their hosts, who cannot qualify for next summer’s tournament.

Greece went into World Cup qualifying on a roll after an impressive Nations League campaign which included a 2-1 win over England at Wembley.

They thumped Belarus 5-1 in their opening fixture but suffered 3-0 and 3-1 defeats to leaders Denmark either side of a 3-1 loss to Scotland at Hampden.

Greece have no chance of catching the Danes or the Scots, who are level on ten points with two games remaining, and their lack of motivation makes them worth opposing on Saturday.

Scotland undoubtedly rode their luck in last month’s win at Hampden, where left-back Kostas Tsimikas – on loan at Roma from Liverpool this season – gave them a well deserved lead in the 62nd minute.

A couple of scrappy goals from set-pieces turned the game around for Steve Clarke’s men before a goalkeeping error helped Lyndon Dykes wrap up the points in injury-time.

Scotland were equally unimpressive in a 2-1 win over bottom side Belarus at Hampden but they tend to be more comfortable playing away from home as underdogs.

They won 2-1 in Poland in their final Nations League group game and beat Greece 1-0 in the away leg of March’s Nations League playoff before a 3-0 defeat in Glasgow.

Scotland’s Group C campaign began with a gritty 0-0 draw in Denmark and they look overpriced to grind out a vital victory against their eliminated hosts.

Koulierakis poses aerial threat to Scotland

Set-pieces could be hugely significant in Piraeus, and Greece’s towering centre-back Konstantinos Koulierakis looks sure to make his presence felt.

Koulierakis had three attempts on goal in the home win over Belarus and 11 in his last eight Bundesliga appearances for Wolfsburg.

Brentford battler Hickey may get an early card

Aaron Hickey was booked just a couple of minutes after making his long-awaited return for Brentford in their Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest.

The Scotland right-back was also cautioned in the 0-0 draw in Denmark and he is likely to have a busy night up against livewire left-winger Christos Tzolis.

Scotland or draw double chance

Greece have been beaten to nil at home by England, Scotland and Denmark recently and have no chance of qualifying for the World Cup.

John McGinn to score or assist a goal

McGinn has scored in three of his last ten appearances for Aston Villa and his set-piece delivery is a key part of Scotland’s attacking gameplan.

Tasos Bakasetas to have one or more shots on target

The Greece captain scored against Belarus on matchday one and had six shots in last month’s losses against Scotland and Denmark.
