What happened to Shubman Gill in IND vs SA 1st Test? Why did the India captain retire hurt and will he bat again?

India’s captain Shubman Gill walked off the field with an injury and was deemed retired hurt during Day 2 of the India vs South Africa Test at Eden Gardens on Saturday morning.
After fielding for 55 overs and not batting on Day 1, Gill joined KL Rahul at the crease on 75/2 but only managed to bat for 3 balls before walking off with the physio.

Despite India losing the wickets of all the subsequent batters, he did not come in to bat alongside Axar Patel, who played alongside the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah.
How did Shubman Gill get injured?
The incident happened at the 34.5 over mark, when the batter swept Simon Harmer for a four towards the backward square, when he immediately felt discomfort in his neck and called the physio.
He was unable to play any further part, despite being eligible to bat again, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided an update on social media.

“Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress,” read the BCCI official statement.
Soon after the injury, the broadcasters also showed a replay from the morning, where he was seen complaining about his stiff neck and talking to the support staff.
He likely came to the ground with some discomfort, which did not allow him to bat. Gill did not return to bat in the first innings as India were bowled out for 189 runs, having a lead of just 30 runs.
