Stranger Things: How Did Henry Creel Become Vecna?

The final season of Stranger Things is almost upon us, and it is always good to look back on one of the major antagonists in the science fiction horror franchise that terrified fans since Season 4.
Played by Jamie Campbell Bower, Vecna (aka Henry Creel) is notable for his fearsome humanoid appearance and his malevolent psychic abilities.
After displaying immense power and terror in the previous season, viewers will soon discover that there’s so much more to him after the Duffer brothers confirmed Vecna’s massive level-up in Season 5.
Stranger Things’ Vecna: Origins, Powers & Agenda Explained
Henry Creel wasn’t born evil. He was born to a World War II veteran, Victor Creel, and his wife, Virginia, and they had been living in Nevada until the family decided to move to Hawkins in 1959. His parents hoped that this new life would help him get over his traumatic past, but as soon as they arrived in their new home, Henry knew he had developed a special psychic power.
This ability only sent Henry down the dark path after he psychologically tortured his family and eventually killed them. His father was blamed for his crimes, and these strange phenomena attracted the attention of Dr. Martin Brenner, who brought Henry to the Hawkins National Laboratory. Here, he became test subject 001.

During a clash between Henry and Eleven, the latter managed to overpower him and send him through a portal to an alternate dimension. Henry’s stay in this world transformed him into Vecna.
The scope of Vecna’s psychic power ranges from telepathy and mental manipulation to psionic resistance and regenerative healing. As the show’s villain, he is responsible for the killings of several teenagers in Hawkins, most of whom suffered from guilt or trauma. In short, he preys on people experiencing mental health issues.
Vecna’s ultimate goal is to open four gates to the Upside Down, and his victims’ sufferings seemingly increase his psychic connection and maximize his ability to open gates.

If Vecna’s powers in Season 4 already sent shivers down your spine, wait until you see his final form in Season 5. Matt Duffer spoke with Empire and revealed that viewers will witness a deadlier Vecna this time:
We’ve been calling him Vecna 2.0, because he’s changed. He’s stronger and scarier than ever, with new real-world abilities. In Season 4, he was deadly because he could infiltrate your mind and manipulate you in that manner. Now he can kick your a** in truly violent ways, like Freddy on steroids.
Bower teased that Vecna will show his human side again despite becoming even more monstrous, citing that the villain was once a lonely child who needed to be cared for.
