It’s six years since England famously knocked out New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and 13 since they last beat the All Blacks at Twickenham.
England are in the unusual position of being favourites – albeit only narrowly – as they aim to win a tenth consecutive Test match, while New Zealand, having already beaten Ireland and Scotland this month, are looking to take the next step in their bid for a clean sweep against the home nations.

England vs New Zealand preview
It’s been 23 years and 22 matches but England are again favourites to beat New Zealand in a rugby union Test match.
The last time that happened, in November 2002, England gave up six points to the All Blacks and were cruising at 31-14 before two late tries made for a nail-biting finish and a tight 31-28 success.
Coach Clive Woodward marked the victory as a sign that his team were now focused on winning, and he followed that up the next summer with a 15-13 success as underdogs on New Zealand soil, with a team again made up of 12 players from the starting line-up for that autumn’s World Cup final.
Since then there have been another 21 meetings and England have won two of them. However, showdowns at Twickenham have been tight – a two-point defeat last year, a 25-25 draw in 2022, and a one-point success for the All Blacks in 2018 – and bookmakers can see something similar unfolding on Saturday.
Hosts England are the narrowest of favourites, giving up one point on the handicap, as they look to extend their winning run to ten matches.
Results this autumn have been encouraging but it’s possible to pick holes in victories over Australia, who were beaten by Italy last week, and Fiji, who were in the game for long spells before England pulled away with three unanswered tries in the final quarter.
New Zealand have been pushed close by Ireland and Scotland but it’s in their DNA to find an extra gear, as they showed against Ireland with three tries in the final quarter.
That was highlighted as an area of weakness for England last year and it’s one coach Steve Borthwick has taken bold steps to address by naming six British & Irish Lions among his eight replacements, including an entire front row.
George Ford returns at fly-half, having started against Australia in place of Fin Smith, and it all points to a gameplan focused on detail and precision. But a tight contest may need just or two moments to swing one way or the other and the All Blacks look to have more game-changers in their side.
England showed at times against Fiji they can still be vulnerable against moments of creative flair and they have also struggled to get their dangerous runners, notably winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso into the game.
Much has been made of England’s bench strength but New Zealand are renowned for going through the gears and they can do enough to edge a close contest at Twickenham.
Games between these two have often been low-scoring and while a dry afternoon is forecast, conditions may still be tricky and going under the points line also looks a worthwhile bet.
