Cill’s Cuig: Sport to watch on TV this weekend –

It’s that time of the week again, folks. I hope everyone had a good College Christmas Day. Despite the international break bringing a brief pause to the football, there’s still plenty to get stuck into. Here’s what I’ll be keeping an eye on TV over the weekend.

  1. Athy V Summerhill, Saturday 5.15, RTÉ 2

Kildare champions Athy roll into Saturday’s Leinster football quarterfinal after an impressive win over Baltinglass in Aughrim a fortnight ago. Their next opponent comes in the shape of Meath outfit Summerhill, who themselves enjoyed a fine win in the first round.

It’s the first ever competitive meeting between the sides, and the eyes of the country will be watching on RTÉ 2 as these two meet in Newbridge.

Summerhill boast an arsenal of deadly forwards, including Meath captain Eoghan Frayne. Athy will be looking to the likes of Conor Doyle and James McGrath to provide another performance like they did last time out.

   2. Hungary V Ireland, Sunday 2.00, RTÉ 2

The Republic of Ireland conclude their World Cup qualifying campaign at the Puskas Stadium in Budapest against Hungary. Last night’s heroic 2-0 win over Portugal has fans dreaming. Sunday could be a day of days for the country.

A win guarantees qualification from the group and a spot in the playoffs. Ireland’s last meeting with the Hungarians came in the first game of these qualifiers, when a late Adam Idah equaliser gave Ireland a point.

  1. Ireland V Australia, Saturday 8.10, RTÉ 2

Straight after the Athy v Summerhill game, Ireland continue their Quilters Nations Series campaign when Joe Schmidt and Australia come to town.

Andy Farrell and his predecessor Schmidt are no strangers to one another at this stage. They faced off during this year’s British and Irish Lions tour.

  1. Ballygunner V Sarsfields, Sunday 12.45, TG4

Waterford kingpins Ballygunner look to continue their dominance of Munster when they meet Cork’s Sarsfields at Walsh Park.

Last time out, Jason Ryan’s men defeated Na Piarsaigh at the Gaelic Grounds, meaning they’ve defeated the champions of Limerick for the seventh straight year. Their prize for that three-point win is a rematch with Sarsfields, who beat them on their way to the All-Ireland final last year.

  1. Philadelphia Eagles V Detroit Lions, Monday 1.20, Sky Sports Main Event

The pick of the weekend’s NFL action comes when Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles host Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions.

Both sides have enjoyed a fine start to the season. The Eagles sit at 7-2 and the Lions at 6-3. Can they seal their fourth win on the bounce on Sunday evening?
