A pair of Invicta FC veterans in strawweights Angela Hill and Fatima Kline faced off as part of the UFC 322 early prelims on Saturday.
Hill, now 40, had been part of The Ultimate Fighter 20, which introduced the 115lb division to the UFC in 2014 and crowned its first champion. After a handful of fights in the company, she found herself earning a title in Invicta prior to returning to the UFC in 2017. Since then, she’d become what amounts to the UFC’s Iron Woman, with the most fights in strawweight history at 27 coming into Saturday.
Kline, 15 years younger than the veteran, went right after a takedown early in Saturday’s fight. Hill, however would work her way out of a bad spot, reverse, and get off the fence. One takedown dealt with, but Kline was no slouch on the feet either, targeting the body with both punches and kicks. Hill, as is often the case, was active on the feet, but Kline’s attacks seemed to have a little more on them. And with just over 90 seconds left, Kline turned a bodylock following a Hill spinning kick into a takedown.
Fatima would land a big elbow almost immediately, and finish the round in side control, after a brief kimura attempt.
Hill found herself under fire to open round two, with Kline backing Hill up to the fence. A high kick by Kline was blocked. Kline would change levels for a takedown, only for Hill to retreat. Kline appeared to have the edge in speed, something of a shock against “Overkill” Hill. Hill would tag the body, and fired a low kick moments later. Kline came up short on a head kick, then tied things up, taking Hill to the fence again.
Round three found Hill more than likely in need of a comeback, but it was Kline off to a better start once again. She was landing clean on Hill, and Hill was starting to show it. Hill would manage to get in control for a bit, getting Kline outside with her back to the fence. That wouldn’t last long, as Kline attacked at an angle then pushed back, away from Hill, re-establishing her place at center. Moments later, Hill was hit closing the distance, though Kline would end up outside again. Kline, perhaps with that in mind, landed a takedown in tight to the fence. The ref almost instantly warned Hill for having her toes in the fence.
With time winding down in the third, Kline would open up, attacking with ground n’ pound. She’d wind up out of position after a scramble, but did manage to catch Hill with a head kick on the way up just seconds before the horn. Finish or no, no question as to the winner, and that was Fatima Kline.
Kline, a New York native, said following the fight that she was “a little disappointed” in not finding the finish. Either way, Kline put on a very strong showing against Hill, who holds the record among UFC women for octagon time.
