Mexico automatically punched its ticket to next summer’s World Cup as co-hosts, but its 2025 calendar has been a tale of two halves. El Tricolor enjoyed a high point in July when they defeated the United States 2–1 to capture their 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup, lifting the trophy for the first time since 2019.
Since that triumph, however, Mexico’s form has dipped sharply. Aguirre’s squad enters this weekend on a four-match winless run, struggling to generate consistency or attacking confidence.
Perhaps more concerning, Mexico’s home form has faltered. El Tricolor has failed to win any of its last four matches on Mexican soil, recording three draws and one loss while failing to score in two of those contests.
In stark contrast, Uruguay arrives in Torreón riding a wave of success under manager Marcelo Bielsa. La Celeste secured their place in the 2026 World Cup via CONMEBOL qualification back in September, defeating Peru 3–0 with a commanding performance that showcased their aggressive pressing and attacking efficiency.
Uruguay has carried that form into friendlies as well, entering this weekend with four wins in their last five matches, interrupted only by a defensive 0–0 draw on the road against Chile.
