In the midst of a second dominated by penalties, the Bruins lost one of their best killers.
A redirected shot on a Montreal power play jumped up and hit Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy in the face. Players on both teams motioned to the Boston bench, and medical staff came onto the ice in a hurry.
The Bruins announced that McAvoy wouldn’t return early in the third period.
McAvoy skated off with his face in his hands as Bell Centre staff cleaned blood off the ice.
McAvoy, whose season ended from an injury he suffered at the Bell Centre for Team USA last year during the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off, left the arena through the Canadiens tunnel.
