Ethyn Ewing has had the fight week of a lifetime at UFC 232.
Eight days after winning an interim title for Urijah Faber’s A1 Combat promotion, Ewing had his hand raised at Saturday’s UFC event in New York at Madison Square Garden after scoring a stunning upset win over Malcolm Wellmaker. Ewing accepted the fight on just two days’ notice after Wellmaker’s previously scheduled opponent Cody Haddon had to bow out due to an injury.
Wellmaker entered as a massive favorite on most sportsbooks, bringing a 10-0 record into the fight and coming off of four straight knockout victories. It was expected he would roll through Ewing, but the Californian gave Wellmaker trouble from the opening bell and by the end of the fight, a badly bloodied Wellmaker found himself on the wrong end of a unanimous decision.
Ewing is now 9-2 as a pro and certainly one to watch in the UFC’s bantamweight division going forward.
