LAS VEGAS — MLB’s general managers meetings are underway at The Cosmopolitan hotel, where all teams have representatives speaking to the assembled media about their offseason plans and the upcoming season. But the New York Yankees will not be represented in person by their head of baseball operations.

Brian Cashman is not in Las Vegas for the annual event, as MLB and Yankees spokesmen said that he had to attend to a last-minute non-baseball obligation. Instead, Cashman will speak remotely to the media on Wednesday. This will be the first time Cashman has not attended the event in his long tenure as Yankees GM.

Among the Yankees’ top-ranking front-office personnel who have been spotted in attendance are assistant general managers Michael Fishman and Jean Afterman, vice president of player development Kevin Reese, director of baseball operations Matt Ferry and assistant director of player operations Michael Pinsky.

The GM meetings are the unofficial kickoff to MLB’s offseason. Teams meet to discuss their needs, go over the general framework for their rosters and talk about their free agents and trade targets. As an example, when the Yankees acquired Juan Soto and Trent Grisham from the San Diego Padres in 2023, the foundation of that trade was laid at the GM meetings.

The Yankees have several needs they need to fill this offseason, including replacing or re-signing Cody Bellinger and Grisham; adding to the bullpen in the wake of Devin Williams’ and Luke Weaver’s departures; signing a few complementary bench pieces and possibly adding a starting pitcher to a boost the rotation, which will be without Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón and Clarke Schmidt to begin the season.

Cashman last spoke with reporters a week after the Yankees were eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series. At that point, the Yankees had not held their pro scouting meetings, which shape the direction of the team’s offseason plans.
