“Nobody wants to watch 25 min of this” – Former UFC star takes shots after Islam Makhachev’s dominant UFC 322 win
Former UFC star Sam Alvey recently shared his reaction to Islam Makhachev beating Jack Della Maddalena to become the new UFC welterweight king. While the American gave Makhachev his flowers, he seemingly criticized the grappling-heavy fight and claimed fans don’t like watching 25 minutes of that.
Makhachev and Della Maddalena went up against each other in a welterweight title fight in the main event of UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. While many expected Della Maddalena’s size advantage to help him push Makhachev to his limits, the Dagestani grappling maestro dominated the Australian over five rounds and won the fight via unanimous decision.
The former lightweight king is now a two-division UFC champion, joining an exclusive club of MMA legends that includes Conor McGregor, Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, Daniel Cormier, Alex Pereira, B.J. Penn, Randy Couture, Amanda Nunes, Ilia Topuria, and Henry Cejudo. He’s now tied with Anderson Silva for the longest win streak in UFC history, with 16 consecutive wins.
While many were impressed with Makhachev’s dominant performance at a higher weight class, it appears Alvey wasn’t too keen on watching a grappling clinic over five rounds. In an X post, the former UFC star expressed his discontent while promoting Karate Combat and wrote:

“This is a reason @karatecombat is climbing the rankings of sporting events. Islam is GREAT, but nobody wants to watch 25 [minutes] of this.”
Alvey competed in the UFC from August 2014 to August 2022, having faced several high-profile opponents like Rashad Evans, Ryan Spann, Jimmy Crute, and Brendan Allen. Alvey also holds the record for the longest winless streak in promotional history, going nine fights without picking up a victory.
He last fought Cameron Graham in his heavyweight debut at B2 Fighting Series 183 in May 2023, winning the fight via third-round TKO.
