Man (38) dies after being stabbed in chest at property in Cork

The 38-year-old died after suffering a stab injury to his chest during an altercation at a property in Hollyhill on Cork’s northside in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardaí and paramedics were called to a property at Hollyville shortly after 4am after being alerted that a male had been seriously injured.

A man was discovered at the property bleeding profusely from an apparent stab wound.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where, despite the desperate efforts of doctors to stabilise his condition, he died a short time later.

The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a full post mortem examination will be conducted at CUH.

A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene by Gardaí.

The man detained is understood to be known to the deceased.

He was detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and taken to a Cork garda station for questioning.

The man can be held for up to 24 hours though this period can be extended to allow the man avail of medical, rest and food breaks.

Gardaí are now conducting door to door inquiries in the area to determine if anyone heard or saw anything suspicious in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A full forensic and technical examination of the scene is also being conducted.

Gardaí are also checking CCTV security camera footage from the area to determine all movements to and from the property where the fatal incident is believed to have occurred.

Gardaí stressed that the nature of their investigation will be determined by the results of the post mortem examination.

However, Gardaí are expected to launch a full murder investigation.

“A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation from the incident room at Gurranabraher Garda Station,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“A Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has also been assigned to support the family of the deceased. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.”

“Anyone with available camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of Hollyville, Hollyhill, Cork city, between 3.30am and 4.30am this morning (Sunday) November 16 2025 is asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.”

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station on (021) 4946200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station. Investigations are ongoing.”

The deceased is understood to be from the Cork area.

However, he was not resident at the property that Gardaí were called to early on Sunday morning.

Detectives are trying to clarify the precise circumstances in which the deceased had called to the property.

Gardaí are liaising with the family of the deceased.
