Maduro’s public appearance and his comments about seeking peace come as tensions with the US rise amid the presence of warships in the Caribbean near Venezuela’s coast.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro invoked Beatles frontman John Lennon and even sang a few lines from his iconic song “Imagine” on Saturday, in an unusual appeal for peace at a time when tensions with the United States are rising in the Caribbean.
Maduro made the remarks during a rally with supporters in Petare, one of the most populous neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Caracas. Pausing mid-speech, he asked his communications minister, Alfred Nazareth, to remind him of the song’s name before humming a short passage from “Imagine” over the event’s sound system.
“For the young ones, look up the lyrics,” Maduro told the crowd. “It is an inspiration for all times. It is an anthem for all eras and generations, left by John Lennon as a gift to humanity. Long live the eternal memory of that great poet and musician.”
Switching briefly to English, he added: “Peace, peace, peace.”
Maduro’s remarks came as the Trump administration continues to escalate its military campaign in waters around Venezuela.
The Venezuelan President earlier this week also called for peace as his American counterpart Donald Trump was briefed on plans on Venezuela, one of which was a direct hit on Maduro.
On Friday, the US military confirmed its 20th strike on a boat suspected of transporting drugs in the Caribbean Sea. The strike, carried out earlier in the week, killed four people, according to a statement by US Southern Command, which oversees operations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The attack brings the death toll from the series of US maritime strikes that began in September to 80.
US President Donald Trump has ordered a troop buildup in the Caribbean as part of an anti-drug trafficking initiative, but speculation has abounded that Washington may be contemplating military intervention against Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro.
The US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), which oversees American forces in Latin America and the Caribbean, had previously said that the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group had entered its area of responsibility.
On Sunday, it announced in a statement that the strike group had entered the Caribbean Sea, saying the move follows Trump’s “directive to dismantle Transnational Criminal Organizations and counter narco-terrorism in defense of the Homeland.”
The strike group includes the most advanced US aircraft carrier, two guided-missile destroyers, and other support vessels and aircraft.
It joins several warships already in the Caribbean, with the deployment dubbed “Operation Southern Spear.”
