Mandatory Three Hundred Dollars Courses for Motorcyclists

New rules promise safer rides in Belize. Under new government regulations, motorcycle riders will now be required to complete a mandatory two-week training course costing somewhere around three hundred dollars. Transport Minister Dr. Louis Zabaneh says this is a crucial step to improve safety and cut down on accidents.

“There’s gonna be a requirement that all motorcycle license holders must do a two-week course to become certified to ride a motorcycle. Okay, so we’re gonna be offering a two year period for everybody to go through that process and any new, of course, new applicant. And this will be effective January first. Within cabinet, we discussed it and that the training will occur at ITVETs or at other certified institutions. Initially the proposal was for six weeks. Many other jurisdictions go between four weeks and six weeks. We know there’s a cost involved of course and we have to be cognizant of that. So we are looking at a two week course no more than three hundred dollars, and where it’ll be a certified curriculum that will ensure that now riders, drivers of motorcycles will have the requisite skills to be able to maneuver their motorcycles in a safe way.”
