Jameson Williams Sends Clear Message on Dan Campbell Taking Over Playcalling

Lions’ wide receiver Jameson Williams made his thoughts on Dan Campbell taking over as the team’s offensive playcaller very clear

The Detroit Lions picked up a dominant 44-22 win over the beat-up Washington Commanders in Week 10, pushing their record to 6-3 on the season. The 2025 campaign hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing for Detroit, as evidenced by Dan Campbell‘s decision to take over as the team’s offensive playcaller ahead of this game, which recently drew a big reaction from wide receiver Jameson Williams.

After losing both their offensive coordinator (Ben Johnson) and defensive coordinator (Aaron Glenn) over the offseason, there have been some obvious growing pains for the Lions this year. Against the Commanders, though, the offense seemed to operate more efficiently with Campbell at the controls, which led to an eye-opening admission from Williams.

Jameson Williams Addresses Big Dan Campbell Decision

#Lions WR Jameson Williams joined @RapSheet and me on The Insiders on @nflnetwork to talk spontaneous TD celebrations, facing the #Eagles in Philly and Dan Campbell taking over play calling: “I think the game was just called a lot smoother.”

While the Lions appear to be one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the league again this season, their offensive operation hasn’t always been firing on all cylinders. Despite having a slew of playmakers, Detroit has gone through lulls where its offense is stuck in the mud, which typically happens when Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery get limited on the ground.

One guy whose production has been hampered by Detroit’s offensive inconsistencies is Williams. As the Lions’ big-play threat, Williams has always been a boom-or-bust type of player, but that has been taken to new heights this season. Williams has two games with over 100 receiving yards, but he also has three where he has less than 25 receiving yards, including one where he didn’t even catch a pass against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Lions want to get Williams going because when he’s on, he adds another element to their offense that makes them even tougher to stop. It’s telling that Campbell was drawing up plays to free up Williams against the Commanders, and when speaking on his head coach’s first game as Detroit’s offensive playcaller, the former first-round pick sounded pleased with what he saw.

“I think the game was just called a lot smoother,” Williams said on “The Insiders.” “We spread it out well, everybody got a chance, and we just created explosiveness when our numbers were called.”

Lions Sticking with Dan Campbell as Offensive Playcaller

Sometimes, making a simple switch like this can help unlock an offense, and against Washington at least, that much was true. Offensive coordinator John Morton is obviously going to remain involved with this unit, but taking some responsibilities off his plate could help him craft better game plans beforehand to make the in-game play calling a little bit less important.

The difficulty meter is set to get cranked up quite a bit in Week 11, as Detroit draws a tough matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. The Eagles are 7-2, but like the Lions, they have not been perfect to this point. With both teams in the running for the No. 1 seed in the NFC, this game will be well worth watching once it kicks off at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday evening.
