Storm Claudia flooding forces crucial Manchester Airport road to close

A crucial road serving Manchester Airport has been force to close in both directions after severe flooding caused by Storm Claudia. A statement about the road closure has been issued on social media by Stockport Council today.
The local authority wrote: “Following the intense rainfall brought by Storm Claudia, we’re working this morning to clear parts of our road network. “For safety, the A555 is closed in both directions between the Bramhall Oil Terminal junction and the A34 at Handforth.”
Footage captured just before the road was closed shows vehicles battling through deep floodwater, the Manchester Evening News reports.
While Merseyside has avoided the worst impacts of the storm, elsewhere in Greater Manchester, traffic and travel is being affected by closed roads and disrupted public transport.
Browns Lane in Wilmslow remains closed due to a fallen tree between Pinewood Road and Adlington Road.
There is no service on Transpennine Express, Northern and Transport for Wales between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport due to fallen tree on the line.
Services are suspended on Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry and Northern between Stoke-on-Trent and Stockport due to overhead line problems. Services may be diverted via Crewe.
The Environment Agency issued the warning for the River Mersey on Friday night, with flooding expected from 11pm last night (November 14).
The storm has been named by the Spanish meteorological service, but its impact has been felt across much of England and Wales.
Over in Wales, a major incident has been declared after “severe and widespread flooding” was brought on by the “devastating” impact of Storm Claudia.
On Friday, houses in the Bollington area of Cheshire were forced to evacuate after a tree fell on properties and brought down power lines as the storm arrives.
St Helens Council has also warned people in areas of the borough and in Warrington that flooding could occur in streets close to the River Sankey.
Elsewhere in Merseyside, Knowsley Council warned residents that a flood alert is in place near the River Alt from Formby to Huyton.
It comes as a yellow alert for cold weather for a large part of England has been issued from Monday.
A flood alert was also placed on The Ditton cathcment areas which go from Huyton-with-Roby to Widnes.
