Multiple motorways have been shut in Manchester after a serious collision, with police warning that motorists will likely face disruption until at least Monday morning’s rush hour.
There are big queues of traffic after the crash at Simister Island on Sunday night, November 16 with the M66 southbound between Junction 3 and the M60/M62 interchange being closed along with all access to the Simister Island.
Knock-on effects expected to impact motorists dropping their children off at school and heading to work on Monday, November 17.
Sections of multiple motorways are now closed, along with all access to the Simister Island as police remain on the scene to assist vehicles caught within the affected areas and implementing closures requested by police to support their response.
Greater Manchester Police issued a statement to social media to warn motorists of potential delays. A spokesperson said: “We are currently responding to a serious collision on the M60.
“Road closures are in place on (the )M60 between junctions 19 and 17 in both directions, M66 at Simister island in both directions.
“Heavy traffic should be expected on M62 westbound between junction 20 and 16.

“These closures are likely to be in place for some time whilst we conduct enquiries, and could impact those travelling to work and school.
The force added: “We appreciate this disruption is significant, but it is necessary for public safety. We are grateful for your cooperation and understanding.”
Road users travelling on the M66 southbound are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol visible on local road signs, National Highways have said.
Full diversion details:
- Leave the M66 southbound at Junction 3 onto Pilsworth Road.
- At the junction of Pilsworth Road and Moss Hall Road, turn onto Moss Hall Road southbound.
- Continue as Pilsworth Road becomes Hareshill Road and then Queen Elizabeth II Way.
- Follow Queen Elizabeth II Way to the M62 Junction 19 roundabout.
Drivers are currently facing delays of around 30 minutes above normal journey times on the M60 anti-clockwise between Junctions 20 and 18.
The closure was first reported shortly before 10.30pm. It is currently unclear when the motorway will reopen.
