New Streaming Releases for the Week of Nov. 17-23: Movies, Music, and Series

This week, viewers can look forward to an exciting array of new releases across streaming platforms, music, and gaming, highlighted by the return of Ted Danson’s “A Man on the Inside” to Netflix for its second season. Additionally, fans of musical theater will be delighted to hear Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo lending their talents to the “Wicked: For Good” soundtrack.

Among the notable offerings, “The Bad Guys 2” is set to premiere on Peacock. This sequel to the DreamWorks Animation hit follows the same reformed gang of animal criminals as they embark on another heist, now facing a new team dubbed the Bad Girls. The film features returning voice talents, including Sam Rockwell and Awkwafina. However, critics have pointed out that the sequel strays into bizarre territory, with one review describing the plot as drifting “expensively and pointlessly in Earth’s orbit.”

In the realm of new films, “Train Dreams” will debut on Netflix on November 21. Based on Denis Johnson’s acclaimed novella and directed by Clint Bentley, the film stars Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, who navigates life as a lumberjack and railroad worker in the early 20th century. This adaptation promises to evoke a sense of the frontier while exploring the story of an everyday laborer caught in the tides of change.

Another debut film, “The Roses,” reimagines Danny DeVito’s 1989 dark comedy “The War of the Roses.” Directed by Jay Roach and featuring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, this remake charts the transformation of a once-loving couple into bitter adversaries. Critics have noted the film’s descent into a grim narrative, remarking that the escalating tensions strip away the fun as the story progresses.

In the music realm, “Wicked: For Good” will be available for streaming on November 21, allowing fans to immerse themselves in its stirring soundtrack. Standout tracks include Ariana Grande’s “The Girl in the Bubble” and Cynthia Erivo’s “No Place Like Home,” promising to resonate with fans of the genre.

Meanwhile, Aerosmith fans can celebrate the band’s latest collaborative EP titled “One More Time,” featuring next-gen rocker Yungblud. The EP is expected to deliver fresh material, with the lead track “My Only Angel” already setting a lively tone.

For those interested in new series, “Vanguard,” a Swedish drama reflecting themes similar to the acclaimed “Succession,” will make its debut on Viaplay. The series dramatizes the life of media mogul Jan Stenbeck, showcasing ambition, betrayal, and sibling rivalry.

The second season of “A Man on the Inside” will hit Netflix, featuring Danson as Charles, a widower who embraces a role as an amateur detective. This season takes Charles back to college to tackle a new mystery, with his real-life wife, Mary Steenburgen, joining the cast as his love interest.

Additionally, AMC+ is set to release “The Assassin,” starring Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore, where a retired assassin’s solitary life on a Greek island is disrupted by the arrival of her estranged son.

Finally, Jordan Peele takes on the narrative of Black cowboys with his new documentary series “High Horse: The Black Cowboy,” also launching this Thursday on Peacock. This three-part series aims to shed light on the erased stories of Black cowboys throughout history.

In the gaming sphere, “Kirby Air Riders” debuts Thursday, integrating chaotic combat elements from the beloved Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai. Players will engage in racing with unique vehicles, each boasting distinct advantages while equipped with Kirby’s iconic inhalation ability—adding a quirky twist to the racing genre.

As these new titles roll out, audiences are sure to find something engaging to enjoy in movies, music, and games this week.
