David Attenborough lifting Brits’ mental health thanks to new BBC show Kingdon

Sir David Attenborough is lifting the nation’s mental health by bringing the wonders of the natural world into our living rooms.

Psychologists say the BBC’s breathtaking wildlife series Kingdom, which continues on Sunday night, can bring proven benefits for mood and wellbeing.

Narrated by Sir David, 99, the six-part series was filmed over five years in Zambia and follows the real-life struggles and triumphs of four families of leopards, lions, hyenas and wild dogs.

Dr Stuart Whomsley, a clinical psychologist, says programmes like Kingdom can play a powerful role in supporting mental health, particularly when viewers engage emotionally with what they see.

He said: “When you see the wonders of the natural world through a David Attenborough series, it can give you a lift, a reminder that there’s something marvellous and wonderful out there we often miss.

“Attenborough helps because he’s a trusted, wise presence guiding us through it all.”

Dr Whomsley added: “It’s an access point to the majesty of nature, bringing it into your home.

“You don’t need to go and see a leopard, you can find the same sense of connection watching wildlife closer to home, whether it’s birdsong, the Highlands, or a walk through the local park.”

Psychologist and clinical director Josh Dickson says watching animals offers “a sense of all the beauty of nature.”

He said: “It can be inspiring and gives us a sense of wonder. It gets us outside of ourselves for a moment, we become interested in the world again.”

*The latest instalment of Kingdom is on BBC One at 6.25pm on Sunday, or on the BBC iPlayer.
