A “phenomenal” crime thriller that’s just landed on Netflix is captivating viewers within the first 10 minutes of watching.

Absentia originally aired on Prime Video but has now secured a spot on a different streaming platform. Shortly after its arrival on the service, it has already climbed into the viewing charts.

Currently, it sits as the fifth most-watched programme amongst UK subscribers at the time of writing. This represents quite an achievement for a programme that initially aired between 2017 and 2020, particularly when facing competition from several major new releases including The Beast In Me, reports the Mirror.

Viewers without a Netflix account don’t need to fret, however, as all three series are also accessible to watch on Channel 5 at no cost.

The official description reveals that Absentia follows FBI special agent Emily Byrne, who vanishes without trace whilst pursuing one of Boston’s most infamous serial killers, and is subsequently declared dead in absentia.

Six years on, she’s discovered in a woodland cabin, barely conscious and with no recollection of her missing years, before returning home to discover her husband has remarried and her child is being brought up by his new wife.

As though this situation wasn’t complex enough, she quickly becomes a suspect in a fresh string of killings, prompting her to fight to reclaim both her life and identity. Stana Katic takes centre stage as Special Agent Emily Byrn in the series.

She is best known for her role in the popular crime drama Castle, where she portrayed Detective Kate Beckett throughout all eight seasons.

Despite Absentia only achieving a 50% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a more favourable 70% audience score. Fans continue to sing its praises and recommend the series.

One viewer lauded the series, particularly for its lead star. They stated: “Stana is phenomenal per-usual and gives an excellent performance, if you’re not wanting to watch for the plot you should definitely just watch for her. She deserves all the praise and more for this show, hope to see her acting in something big again soon!”

“A very, very intriguing story. A lot of twists and turns, good acting, nice setting. Also every episode finishes with a uh-oh moment. Loved it. Must watch for those who love a dark, twisted, thrilling story.”

Another fan added: “Had me hooked. The twists and turns can be difficult to keep track of but it’s been a long time since a series has had me so captured.

“It is slightly frustrating at times – resulting in many screams and shouts at the screen but I love the way the different story lines have played out and the development of the characters. Would highly recommend.”
