What Dan Campbell said at halftime with Lions’ offense sputtering

In his second week as play caller for the Detroit Lions, coach Dan Campbell is getting a real test in trying to crack the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

The first half didn’t go quite to plan as the Lions totaled 144 yards, but didn’t put up any points until the final five minutes of the first half.

Trailing 13-6 at halftime, Campbell spoke on the NBC broadcast about his team’s first-half performance and what might need to change for the Detroit offense.

“Well (the Eagles are) doing a good job out there defensively,” Campbell said. “We invested a lot to get our pass game going there a little bit.

“Defense doing a hell of a job. We took a couple risks there that didn’t work out. The team knew that could happen, but we’re playing good, we found a little rhythm there offensively and we get the ball second half so I like where we’re going right now.”

The risks the Lions took early on were in reference to consecutive drives where Detroit went for a fourth-down conversion around midfield and failed to pick up either. It took the Lions six drives to finally put points on the board.

If not for a stellar first half from the Detroit defense, the Eagles could’ve grabbed a decent lead. Despite the Eagles starting in Lions territory three times in the first half, they scored just six points on those drives off two field goals.

As Campbell said, the Lions will start with the ball and try to take the late momentum they built from Jameson Williams’ 40-yard touchdown catch into the second half at Lincoln Financial Field.
