Maryville officer critically injured in crash with THP trooper ‘making small improvements,’ police chief says

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp gave an update on an officer who was critically injured in a crash on Friday during a security motorcade for Vice President JD Vance.

Crisp said on Sunday Officer Justin Brown is still in the ICU in critical condition, but he added that Brown is making small improvements.

Brown’s injuries are significant, Crisp said, and the medical staff is continuing to work through challenges that his injuries present.

“We know the prayers of the community continue to cover him,” said Crisp. “His progress is expected to be gradual and he will remain hospitalized for an extended period of time, but we are grateful for the improvement we have seen since Friday.”

Brown was involved in a crash with a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper on East Lamar Alexander Parkway at Merritt Road Friday evening while providing a “dignitary protection detail escort for Vice President JD Vance.”

Crisp said people on the scene immediately rendered aid to Brown and played a critical role in saving his life.
