Olivia Rodrigo Makes Spotify History as “SOUR” Hits 16 Billion Streams

Olivia Rodrigo has reached another defining moment in her fast-rising career as her debut album SOUR surpasses 16 billion streams on Spotify, becoming the first album by a female artist in history to hit this mark. The achievement places Rodrigo in one of the platform’s most exclusive groups. Before her, only Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, and Ed Sheeran reached the milestone with Un Verano Sin Ti, Starboy, and Divide, respectively.

SOUR, released in May 2021, arrived as a cultural reset. Its mix of pop-punk energy, intimate ballads, and diaristic songwriting resonated deeply with Gen Z listeners navigating heartbreak and identity. Although nearly five years have passed since its release, the album continues to evolve into a streaming phenomenon. Last summer, Rodrigo joined Adele as the only female artist with an album containing three songs exceeding two billion streams each. That accomplishment strengthened further when “deja vu” officially crossed the two-billion line, becoming her fourth.
Rodrigo’s streaming dominance intensified again only weeks ago when SOUR became the first album in Spotify history in which every track surpassed 400 million streams, with the emotional closer “hope ur ok” the final song to reach the milestone.
Alongside record-breaking numbers, SOUR left a lasting cultural footprint. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, earned Rodrigo three Grammy Awards, and helped cement her status as one of the most influential pop voices of her generation.
