‘Emerald City’ Lyrics: Is Kelsea Ballerini’s New Song About Ex Chase Stokes & His Ex Madelyn Cline?
Kelsea Ballerini is back with a new EP called Mount Pleasant, and fans are wondering if one of the songs is about her ex Chase Stokes, and his ex Madelyn Cline.
The 32-year-old singer-songwriter’s new song “Emerald City” is gaining attention as fans read into the lyrics.

“I always liked the color of my eyes ’til I knew she had brown / I’m green / Always liked my naive innocence ’til I learned she got around / I’m green,” she sings.
“If I got you, why does she still get me? / I hate to say it, but damn, she’s pretty / Never known this shade of envy / Just tell me I’m your Emerald City.”
If you didn’t know, Kelsea‘s eyes are green, while Madelyn‘s are brown.
“I’m not crazy / I’m just a girl, kinda jealous, kinda insecure / And I hate how it takes me / down an old road where she used to be yours,” she sings.
“Tough to admit it, but it might break me / Let me know you hate to see me hurt / ’Til one day, it won’t faze me / Thinking about you, thinking about her / I’m good as gold, but when she’s around / My true color comes out.”
Chase and Madelyn dated between 2019 and 2020 before their split, and continue to work as an on-screen couple on Outer Banks.
Chase moved on with Kelsea in 2023, and the two just recently split this year.
Adding to the Internet speculation, Kelsea previously opened up about Madelyn in a Call Her Daddy appearance.
“I met [Madelyn] and I talked to her and she’s lovely and I think she’s wildly talented. I think the internet did its best to make it really weird and it just didn’t work for them. I’m stoked to be on set and vibe with everyone.”
“I think [Chase and Madelyn] have a beautiful working relationship and I’m excited to hang with her. People want drama, they don’t want consistency and happiness…I don’t feel insecure with my relationship and I don’t feel insecure about myself,” she said at the time.
