Is Cam Skattebo out for the season? Injury update, return date for Giants RB

NFL Week 11 picks include Bills, Texans and Cowboys
Lorenzo Reyes shares his predictions and best bets ahead of Week 11.
The New York Giants lost rookie running back Cam Skattebo to a gruesome-looking ankle injury in the second quarter of their Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Skattebo’s injury occurred during the second quarter while he was trying to catch a middle-of-the-field pass from Jaxson Dart. The rookie running back’s right leg got caught under him while Eagles linebacker Zack Baun twisted him to the ground.
When Skattebo rolled onto his back, his ankle was pointing the wrong way.
The Giants’ medical staff quickly tended to Skattebo on the field. His injured right leg was placed into an air cast, and he was carted into the locker room before being transported to a local hospital.
Skattebo needed emergency surgery to repair the injury, which was deemed an open ankle dislocation. He also suffered a fractured fibula and a ruptured deltoid ligament as a part of the injury.
How long will those maladies keep Skattebo out of action? Here’s what to know about his injuries and when fans may see the running back on the field again.
Is Cam Skattebo out for the season?
Yes, Skattebo is expected to miss the rest of the season as he recovers from surgery to repair his dislocated ankle, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport..
Skattebo will finish his rookie season having recorded 405 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 101 carries. He also added 24 catches for 207 yards and two touchdowns through the air while serving as a catalyst for the Giants’ offense.
When will Cam Skattebo return?
The good news for Giants fans? While Skattebo’s injury was severe, it isn’t expected to impact him entering the 2026 season.
Rapoport reports Skattebo is only expected to be sidelined 4-6 months after his ankle injury and surgery. That will allow the Arizona State product to return for the team’s offseason program.
Rapoport’s report came after he had expressed confidence that Skattebo would be healthy to start the 2026 NFL season despite the serious nature of his injury.
“If all is good and clean and the surgery went as well as everyone believes, he should be back with no issues for next year,” Rapoport said on NFL Network the morning of Oct. 27. “It’s a gruesome injury but the recovery is actually not as bad. We’ve seen several others with similar injuries come back and play the next year. Dak Prescott comes to mind. So, 2026 for Cam Skattebo.”
The Giants did not provide a specific update or timeline for Skattebo’s return from injury. Then-coach Brian Daboll simply told reporters “all went well” with the running back’s surgery.
“He’s recovering,” Daboll said Oct. 27. “Obviously, he’ll be missed but on the road to recovery. … He’s got a road ahead of him.”
Giants RB depth chart
The Giants have three healthy running backs remaining in their organization with Skattebo sidelined for the season. Below is a look at the group’s pecking order.
- Tyrone Tracy Jr.
- Devin Singletary
- Dante Miller (practice squad)
Tracy and Singletary have split the workload at running back relatively evenly in Skattebo’s absence. Tracy has started each of the two games since Skattebo’s injury and has out-snapped Singletary 74-56 over that span.
Tracy has posted 108 yards on 23 total touches across those two contests while Singletary has garnered 124 across 21. Daboll was seemingly content to ride the hot hand between the two, so it will be interesting to see what interim coach Mike Kafka will do as he takes over the team in Week 11.
New York also has Miller on its practice squad. He has not yet dressed for a game this season, as Tracy and Singletary have taken on all the work as a two-back tandem since Skattebo went down. Perhaps that will change with Dart – who has averaged 7.9 carries per game as a starter – out for Week 11 with a concussion.
