Adam Simpson in Advanced Talks with Carlton for Coaching Role

West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson is in advanced discussions with Carlton regarding a potential director of coaching role to support Michael Voss for the 2026 season. According to sources close to the negotiations, the Blues are keen on bringing Simpson in to enhance their football department next year.

Simpson, who led the Eagles to a premiership in 2018, has reportedly been approached by several clubs in Victoria but appears to have settled on Carlton. This comes on the heels of the Blues parting ways with head of football Brad Lloyd following a disappointing campaign in 2025. In a bid to rebuild, Carlton recently appointed Chris Davies, the football boss from Port Adelaide, to take charge of their football operations.

In a series of coaching changes, senior assistant Ash Hansen has transitioned to the backline, stepping in for the departing Aaron Hamill. Leigh Adams has taken on the role of midfield coach, collaborating with Tim Clarke, while Jordan Russell, previously in charge of the forward line, has shifted to a development role. He is succeeded by Josh Fraser, who joined Carlton from Collingwood.

Simpson, who was let go by West Coast in July 2024, is set to relocate to Melbourne in preparation for the upcoming season. Over the past year, he has been active in the media and intends to continue these commitments alongside his potential new role.

The prospect of Simpson’s appointment raises questions about the future of current coach Michael Voss. Reports indicate that Voss has not received any guarantees about his position beyond the start of the 2026 season from CEO Graham Wright, adding another layer of uncertainty for the club as it looks to reposition itself in the competitive landscape of the AFL. Simpson’s extensive experience, having coached West Coast for over a decade, could provide much-needed support at a pivotal time for Carlton.
