A person has sadly died in a collision on the M66 motorway.

Emergency services were first called to the scene on the motorway near the M60 junction at Simister Island on Sunday evening (November 16).

The motorway was fully closed off as police and paramedics responded.

The Manchester Evening News understands a person sadly died in the collision. They were believed to be a pedestrian.

Greater Manchester Police are set to release more information on the incident later today.

A stretch of the motorway was closed off both ways after the incident as accident investigation work was carried out.

It remained closed off at Simister Island for hours overnight and into this morning, causing huge queues and long delays on both the M66 and M60.

The M66 was fully reopened again at around 11am this morning, according to National Highways.
