Spotify app won’t open? iPhone and Android app crashing every time as weird bug leaves music streamer ‘down’

A frustrating glitch has left hundreds of Spotify subscribers unable to listen to their favourite songs, playlists, and podcasts this morning. The unexplained bug causes the Spotify app to crash as soon as it’s opened. Attempting to reopen the app has left subscribers in an endless loop of app crashes, users complain.
The Spotify glitch has impacted both iPhone and Android users.

Unable to stream music or podcasts, Spotify subscribers have flooded social media to complain about the bug. Independent website Down Detector, which monitors the performance of online services and websites by monitoring social media chatter for reports of problems, is showing a sharp spike in those claiming that Spotify is down. At its peak, 413 people were complaining about a Spotify outage every minute on social media in the UK.
Spotify continues to work as expected via a desktop web browser.
The Swedish streaming service has acknowledged the bug on its forums. A moderator for the company posted: “We’ve been receiving reports that starting podcasts in the mobile app causes it to crash. This is happening both on Apple and Android devices and it’s not specific podcasts.”
According to some Spotify users, restarting the Android phone or iPhone, redownloading the Spotify app, and clearing the cache (Android only) does not resolve the issue.
Spotify says the issue is currently “under investigation”.
