An inquest has opened into the death of a 16-year-old boy at Barry Island Pleasure Park earlier this year.

Emergency services were called on 23 May after Taha Ali Soomro, from Grangetown in Cardiff, suffered a suspected seizure and cardiac arrest.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics, but later died.

A 15-year-old boy, also from Grangetown, was arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident, and later released on bail pending further enquiries. The cause of death remains unexplained.

A post-mortem at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales proved inconclusive.

Andrew Morse, assistant coroner for south wales central, reported the cause of death has yet to be determined.

The inquest, at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court. was adjourned to a later date.

In a statement released at the time of the tragedy, the pleasure park said staff “did their best to assist the emergency services but, unfortunately, the boy suffered a medical emergency and could not be saved”.

It added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time.”

Taha’s death prompted a major investigation by South Wales Police, who appealed for information from anyone who was at the amusement park at around 5pm on Friday 23 May, and made a plea for any mobile phone footage taken around the time of the incident.
