Scotiabank names new chief risk officer amid management shuffle

Bank of Nova Scotia BNS-T is shuffling its most senior leadership team as the bank continues to rejig its business as part of a strategic turnaround plan, shifting its top executives in its risk and strategy units.
After four years as Scotiabank’s chief risk officer, Phil Thomas is taking on the role of group head and chief strategy and operating officer. He will focus on client experience and AI innovation and will oversee corporate functions including data and analytics, real estate and global corporate affairs, and marketing.
Mr. Thomas joined Scotiabank in 1997 and has worked in roles in retail banking, digital channels, contact centres and risk management.
Deputy chief risk officer Shannon McGinnis has been promoted to chief risk officer, becoming the first woman to hold the role at Scotiabank. Last year, the lender hired Ms. McGinnis from Toronto-Dominion Bank, where she was executive vice-president of non-financial risk management.
Ottawa takes aim at banking sector with measures to boost competition
Chief strategy and operating officer Anique Asher is moving to the bank’s real estate secured lending division as executive vice-president, overseeing a key business at the bank. She will also sit on the the board of the Canadian Bankers Association, which represents financial institutions in lobbying efforts with the government, starting in the new year.
Since joining the lender in 2018, Ms. Asher has held executive roles overseeing finance and strategy, as well as planning, analysis and optimization. She previously worked at Manulife and PwC.
Senior vice-president of real estate secured lending Tracy Gomes has been tapped as executive vice-president and chief risk officer of Canadian banking, global wealth management and credit risk.
The bank also appointed chief corporate affairs and sustainability officer Meigan Terry as executive vice-president and chief global corporate and public affairs officer. She will add responsibility for global government affairs as part of her role.
