World Cup qualifying: Build up as Scotland host Denmark with finals place on line

“I’ve been very lucky to play in, you know, Champions League finals,” added Robertson.

“I’ve been very lucky to win trophies and things like that. But the one thing I’ve probably been good at throughout my career is I’ve never thought about it until it actually happened.”

Scotland can only secure a place at next summer’s finals with a win over the Danes and Robertson says the squad is “feeling good”, while he is excited rather than overly nervous.

“We need to focus on the task at hand,” he explained. “We need to think about how we’re going to stop a really good team and also how we’re going to try and cause some problems.

“That’s where our full focus has got to be for the next 24 hours. We’re now on the eve of it. One more sleep away and I think we’re all excited.

“Obviously, we’ve got a chance to qualify for the World Cup, which you can’t play down. But yeah, we’ve got to be ready to perform tomorrow night as well. And I hope that the boys will be.”

Despite Denmark’s slip-up against Belarus on Saturday – a 2-2 draw in Copenhagen – Robertson says they’re a team “full of quality.”

“It’s always tough against them and we need to bring the best version of ourselves,” said the left-back. “And if we do that as a team, then we believe that we can get the result that we need.

“If we perform the way I believe we can perform and the way we’ve shown at times, maybe not for a full 90 minutes, but we’ve definitely showed that over periods of time in this campaign, then I believe we’ve got enough to get the win.”

Robertson acknowledges Denmark will be feeling exactly the same. They are sitting on the top of the group on 11 points and know a draw at Hampden will be good enough to see them through as group winners.

But Robertson hopes his “dreams” of playing for Scotland reach a peak on Tuesday night, with the help of a packed and passionate Hampden.

“I hope the supporters get in early, make a noise, support your team and get right behind us because that’s what we need,” he added.
