Scotland vs Denmark preview
Scotland suffered the first defeat of their World Cup qualifying campaign in a weekend of drama in Group C but they were then thrown a lifeline as Denmark missed a glorious chance to move three points clear with one game to play.
A 3-2 loss in Greece looked as if it had ended Scotland’s hopes of qualifying automatically for the World Cup. Denmark’s 2-2 draw with Belarus means the Scots are still in the running for top spot but they are 13-5 shots to gain the victory they need at Hampden, and know they will need to improve on Saturday’s performance.
It would have made sense to keep things tight in that game and not offer any encouragement to the Greeks, who were out of qualification contention and had little to play for.
However, Scotland looked edgy from the first whistle and were chasing the game from the seventh minute after Tasos Bakasetas took advantage of some dreadful defending to put the home team in front.
Scotland were eventually consigned to a chaotic defeat, but while they were left with a huge sense of relief when Denmark failed to capitalise, they know it was a massive opportunity wasted for the Danes, who had failed to prevail despite winning the shot count 35-7.
A Danish victory would have put them three points clear with the added insurance of a healthy goal difference advantage, but they were ultimately denied by the dogged Belarusians, who had previously given the Scots a scare in a 2-1 October defeat at Hampden Park.
Denmark have certainly made life a lot harder for themselves, but they will be ready for the final challenge and can pass it with flying colours.
Brian Riemer’s side conceded two goals in a mad four minutes against Belarus, but that was completely out of character for a side who had conceded just one goal in the previous five matches.
Denmark’s air of complacency is unlikely to continue and they are set to take the Scots with a stronger squad with Joachim Anderson and Rasmus Hojlund hoping to recover from bouts of illness.
Scotland have been given an unexpected second chance and will be backed by a vocal crowd, but they were poor in defence against Greece and may struggle to find the necessary improvement.
Steve Clarke’s side faced 18 shots in Piraeus, ten of which were on target. Scotland were at their most vulnerable right at the heart of their backline, where centre-backs Grant Hanley and John Souttar looked out of their depth and goalkeeper Craig Gordon struggled on his return to the side. It is hard to see those fundamental issues being fixed in just a few days time, so it makes sense to back the Danes at odds-against to secure a decisive victory.
Cherries attacker can hit the target
One of the positives to come out of Scotland’s 3-2 loss to Greece was the lively performance of Bournemouth winger Ben Gannon-Doak. The 20-year-old grabbed his first senior international goal in Piraeus and looks overpriced to register a shot on target against Denmark.
Danes can deliver high-scoring success
Denmark have scored 14 goals in their last four qualifiers and they can demonstrate their offensive prowess at Hampden Park. The teams drew 0-0 in Copenhagen on matchday one with the Scots seemingly delighted to secure a share of the spoils. However, there will be a different dynamic in Glasgow with Scotland having to take a more front foot approach and Denmark looking to exploit them on the counter-attack.
Scotland vs Denmark Bet Builder
Mikkel Damsgaard to score or assist
Mikkel Damsgaard has had a positive campaign, delivering three goals and one assist, and he should have his say in Glasgow.
Over 2 goals
Scotland were involved in an end-to-end encounter at the weekend and their contest with Denmark could be another high-scoring affair.
John McGinn to be carded
McGinn has become established as one of Scotland’s most influential players, but he can have a short fuse and was booked after just ten minutes of Saturday’s 3-2 loss away to Greece.
