Belgium looks to secure a spot in the World Cup on Tuesday on home soil, as they prepare to take on the winless Liechtenstein.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be the biggest in the event’s history, with more countries competing for ultimate glory than ever before. That means qualifying is more important than ever before. While the powerhouse nations are always favorites to move on to the World Cup, there is always the chance for the smaller nations to pull off a stunner.
In next year’s World Cup, 16 countries under the UEFA banner will be eligible to compete in the tournament.
Belgium has not been a dominant force in the group stage, but they have managed not to lose any of their first seven matches, including salvaging a point in a 1-1 draw with Kazakhstan this past Saturday.
However, the Belgians’ work is far from done. In order to clinch a spot in the World Cup, they need to have the right result on Tuesday. A win sends Belgium to the World Cup, while a draw sends them through as long as North Macedonia or Wales defeat the other by enough goals. A loss for Belgium makes them subject to losing first place in Group J.
Belgium beat up Liechtenstein in their first meeting in qualification in September, winning 6-0 on the road.
