Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel tells Danish media about close friendship with ex-Rangers man in Glasgow

Kasper Schmeichel has had an eventful international break.
The Celtic goalkeeper was furious after his Denmark side blew the chance to secure their place at the World Cup by failing to beat Belarus in Copenhagen.
This has set up what is effectively a one-match play-off with Scotland on Tuesday, where he will go head-to-head with Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston for a place at next summer’s tournament.
Schmeichel’s start to the season has been criticised by some, with his form not quite at the level it was in his first campaign in Glasgow.
And he has been discussing his life in Scotland with the Danish media, with his family still living in Denmark.

Schmeichel is in the last year of his contract at Celtic, and it isn’t yet clear if he would consider extending his stay.
But given his family situation and the fact that he turns 40 next year, you would have to doubt that he’s likely to extend.

One person he has been close to in Scotland is compatriot Peter Lovenkrands, whom he has known for a long time.
He told Ekstra Bladet: “I have children of an age where they are going to do their final exams and things like that.
“So obviously they need to have some stability in their lives. So there are a lot of considerations, but ultimately the situation is what it is.
“Peter [Lovenkrands] is back in Glasgow now. We have known each other for a very, very long time. We lived close to each other when I was in Leicester and he was in Birmingham.
“So it’s been great to have more time with him than we’ve had in the last many years. So yeah, I don’t talk about it publicly, but it’s a decision we’ve made as a family for our kids to give them the best chance.”
Lovenkrands spent six years in Glasgow and earned 22 caps for Denmark. Nowadays, his dog is just as famous as he is.
The goalkeeping situation at Celtic
Schmeichel replaced his close friend Joe Hart in 2024, and began his Celtic career in stellar form.
He made a remarkable start to this season too, going eight matches without conceding a goal.
Viljami Sinisalo is also a full international, and recently reiterated his desire for more game time. He has looked capable on his rare appearances for Celtic.
Whether Sinisalo takes over from Schmeichel or the Hoops buy a new number one next year remains to be seen; it could be a decision for Wilfried Nancy to make.
