In a critical moment for Thamesmead Waterfront, significant discussions are taking place regarding the future of public transportation and urban development in the area. Prior to the Spending Review conducted in June, both the mayor and Peabody, the developmental stakeholders of the Thamesmead site, expressed their belief that extending the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to the region was essential for unlocking its potential. However, despite these assertions, no funding for this crucial transportation link has been secured from the government thus far. In response to the lack of financial support, officials indicated they would continue collaborating with Transport for London (TfL) to establish a comprehensive business case for the extension.
Ed Mayes, representing Lendlease, underscored the direct correlation between accessible public transport and the ability to meet housing demands in Thamesmead. He highlighted the urgent need for a transport solution, stating that without it, delivering the high-density homes that the community requires would be untenable.
Thamesmead, often regarded as one of London’s overlooked areas, boasts two miles of riverfront and possesses natural assets that, regrettably, remain largely inaccessible to the public. The proposed development seeks to transform this landscape. Mayes elaborated on the vision for the area, which includes creating new parks, enhancing blue waterways, and revitalizing riverfront access for a burgeoning community projected to include 15,000 homes. In addition to residential units, the plan encompasses the development of workplace spaces and a new town center poised to serve the local population.
