Austin Reaves Is Playing Like a Star — and Bringing His ‘A’ Game Beyond the Court

Austin Reaves doesn’t look, or play, like an undrafted guard clawing for relevance anymore. Reaves has come out firing, stacking early-season numbers that don’t usually belong to a former two-way signee. He started the year by dropping 25 or more in five straight games — the first Laker to pull that off since Kobe Bryant — and from there, the breakout has only picked up speed.

In a season where the Lakers have already had stretches without LeBron James and Luka Doncic due to injuries, Reaves hasn’t just filled gaps; he’s dictated the offense. Averaging 28.3 points per game, he’s sitting fourth in the NBA scoring ranks. He’s been one of their steadiest sources of scoring and playmaking, driving stretches of offense that have kept the Lakers competitive early on.

As someone who grew up in a small town in Arkansas, Reaves carries a surprisingly soft-spoken demeanor — the kind that doesn’t broadcast how competitive he actually is. But that edge is real, and he says it’s been there since childhood.

“I don’t do something unless I think I can win, that’s how my parents raised me,” Reaves tells Rolling Stone. “Anything we did around the house, it was me, my brother, Mom, and Dad, and it would turn into a knock-down, drag-out fight to try to win. So, that’s the way I’m wired. It’s hard for me to have fun in the moment of doing something if I’m not competing to win. It’s kind of a downfall sometimes, but then again, I probably wouldn’t be where I’m at if I wasn’t like that.”

Off the court, that same quiet confidence carries over to his passions. An avid golfer, he brings the same energy and focus to both his passions, which made him a perfect fit as a TravisMathew ambassador. Known for elevated basics that are effortless and timeless, TravisMathew mirrors Reaves’ understated approach. His debut collection merges his love of basketball and golf into pieces that feel effortless, confident, and quietly distinctive — just like Reaves himself.
