Robert Irwin honors Steve Irwin’s legacy with his father’s shirt on Dancing with the Stars
In a touching revelation, Robert Irwin has shared how he keeps the memory of his late father, Steve Irwin, alive as he participates in the popular competition series, “Dancing with the Stars.” The 21-year-old wildlife conservationist posted a heartfelt clip on Instagram, explaining that he wears his father’s shirt on every show day, a practice that began before his debut on the show in September.
“I like that it still looks and feels like him,” Robert said, reflecting on the significance of the shirt, which bears the marks of time with holes and repairs. After going through his father’s belongings, Robert found this tattered shirt and took it upon himself to fix it up by sewing on new buttons and patching the holes. He sees the imperfections as stories of their own, echoing the adventurous and vibrant life led by his father.
Robert mentioned that he has two “good luck charms” he carries with him to the DWTS studio every Tuesday. In addition to his father’s shirt, he wears a ring crafted from repurposed keys that belonged to his childhood home. This ring features the engraved number “1638,” which signifies the address of the Australia Zoo, a place synonymous with the Irwin family legacy.
“This experience has truly changed my life,” Robert expressed, emphasizing his desire to keep his father’s memory present during his performances. He noted that donning the shirt before rehearsals helps him feel close to his father, effectively giving him a sense of comfort and strength. He has made it a ritual to dance in his father’s shirt prior to the official performances, describing it as a way for him to embrace his family’s legacy.
