Wynne Evans has spoken out after his career was plunged into crisis following a scandal on Strictly Come Dancing.
The Go Compare opera singer, 53, has returned to the limelight after being dropped from the Strictly live tour earlier this year following claims of inappropriate comments and behaviour.
He had earlier apologised for an “unacceptable” joke which appeared to be about another Strictly contestant during a photocall for the live tour, saying he was “deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions caused”.
Weeks earlier, Wynne and his pro partner Katya Jones had been forced to address a moment captured on live TV where she appeared to move his hand from her waist, with the pair later insisting it was a “joke”.

Wynne has now admitted it was a moment that “does look creepy”, during an interview with Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley on Good Morning Britain.
“I apologise for that,” he began, saying it was originally Katya’s idea. He claimed: “Katya said to me, ‘Let’s get down the front, put your hand on my waist, I’ll move it back, we’ll see if anybody notices.’
“It was as simple as that, a body language experiment, and of course, it was naive of me. I hadn’t realised. I’d never lived in this world before where everybody looks at everything you do, and of course, it looked weird on the TV, it was really, really odd… but it was just messing around in the Clauditorium.”

Wynne also claimed that he and Katya had been joking around with “missed high fives” for five weeks before the scandal erupted, and it was a “running joke” that was “taken out of context”.
“It was a nightmare,” he said, speaking of the clips beginning to circulate and rumours beginning to swirl.
Katya has also previously addressed the scandal and defended Wynne, saying he has been portrayed as “someone he is not”.
“Quite frankly, I can’t bear sitting here watching this man being portrayed as someone he is not,” she said during a past appearance on It Takes Two.
“And in fact it couldn’t be further away from the truth, so I have to make this absolutely clear, that this whole incident with the hand and the high-five on Saturday night, it was an inside joke between Wynne and I. Was it a silly joke? Yes. Was it a bad joke? Yes.”

She added: “Even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is total nonsense.”
Speaking on Good Morning Britain today, Wynne went on to say that he and Katya made an apology video, but the BBC asked them to create another, shorter one, although he admitted the second one was a bit “hostage-style”.
The backstage video showed the pair apologising and Katya insisting that Wynne is “not a creep”, and that they were “just messing around”.
The BBC previously stated that “all parties agreed” that publishing the shorter version was the best course of action.
A spokesperson previously said, which Susanna repeated on Good Morning Britain today: “For the avoidance of doubt, the video in question was filmed twice and all parties agreed at the time that the second, more concise version would be better suited for social media.”

Reflecting on the “jokes” between him and Katya that transformed into a scandal, Wynne told Susanna and Richard: “It was totally naive, and it was totally stupid. I paid the ultimate price in terms of my career, it all spiralled from there. I take responsibility for it, but does the punishment fit the crime? That’s for other people to decide.”
Wynne went on to discuss the second scandal he was involved in, which resulted in his removal from the live tour.
He said, “I had a nickname for one of the contestants, a male contestant, and I called him this nickname. It was not an appropriate word for the workplace, but that was taken totally out of context.”

He said that he was “not even looking” at a woman whose name was circulated after it was claimed that the comment was made about her.
“Obviously, I have to take responsibility for that as well; that was just a word I said off-camera, and there was a journalist in the back of the room who happened to be filming it. It’s a word.”
When asked if he wished he’d never gone on Strictly, Wynne replied: “I wish I’d had a better insight into it before I went into it, that is absolutely for sure. But it’s given me a greater understanding of my own mental health and where I am in my life and how I can now help other people who don’t want to talk about mental health.”

He added: “I’m looking forward to getting back out there and singing, and learning from my mistakes but not letting them define me for the rest of my life.”
A BBC spokesperson previously said: “We provided comprehensive duty of care for Wynne that included support by wellbeing professionals. He was also provided with direct access to a designated contact at the BBC, who was available to assist him at any time, plus he has been offered continued support since his contract with the BBC concluded.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
