Shai Hope becomes second fastest Windies batter to 6000 runs, ahead of Brian Lara

West Indies captain Shai Hope scored his 19th ODI century in the second match against New Zealand at McLean Park in Napier, where he also crossed the 6000-run mark in the format. Hope reached the milestone in 142 innings, becoming the second fastest West Indies batter to achieve it, behind Vivian Richards, who did so in 141 innings. Hope surpassed Brian Lara, who needed 155 innings to reach the same landmark.

Hope also matched Lara on West Indies’ all-time ODI centuries list, with both now holding 19 centuries. They are second only to Chris Gayle, who leads with 25. Lara reached his 19 centuries in 285 innings, while Hope achieved the tally in 142 innings.

Hope’s 66-ball century was additionally the fifth fastest by a West Indies batter in ODIs. The fastest for the Caribbean side remains Brian Lara’s 45-ball hundred against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 1999.

Shai Hope career

Hailing from Barbados, Shai Diego Hope is a right-handed West Indies batsman who made his Test debut against England in 2015. Before entering international cricket, he had played just 14 first-class matches but earned selection after scoring a double century against the Windward Islands on the final day of the Regional Four-Day Competition.

Hope made his first-class debut in the 2012–13 season and caught the attention of selectors after an impressive 2014–15 campaign, where he finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer with 628 runs in nine matches. Born on November 10, 1993, he is 32 years old and plays as a wicketkeeper-batsman. He bats right-handed and is currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI batting rankings.
