NC By Train celebrates highest ridership last month in 35 years of service

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – The North Carolina Department of Transportation is celebrating the highest train ridership since its program was established.

The Rail Division has announced that NC By Train, the state-supported intercity passenger rail service, had its highest rider count in October 2025 than any month in the last 35 years.

According to the release, the trains carried 74,000 passengers, which is 10% more than in October 2024.

“We’re thrilled to see passenger rail ridership continue to grow across North Carolina as more people experience the convenience and benefits of train travel,” said NCDOT Rail Division director Jason Orthner. “Whether you are traveling for business, sporting events, school, to visit family or just for fun, NC By Train is a comfortable, affordable, and stress-free way to get to your destination.”

The release highlights the enmities the service provides such as getting to view the Carolina Panthers’ home games in Charlotte on November 30 and December 21.
