Never ask a gentleman his salary, a lady her age, and Minka Kelly how she feels about her boyfriend, Imagine Dragons’ lead singer, Dan Reynolds. On Tuesday, Kelly appeared on Today With Jenna & Friends to promote Champagne Problems, her new Netflix holiday rom-com. She warmly chatted with Jenna Bush Hager and guest host Olivia Munn about the movie, filming in Paris, and how great Christmas decorations are. Then Hager brought up Kelly’s relationship, and everything got really weird really fast.
After a riveting conversation about artificial Christmas trees (Kelly and Munn have adopted, Hager still does real), Hager awkwardly stumbled into a question about Kelly’s relationship. “Speaking about the holidays and love in this rom-com, you have a very big love in your life right now,” she stuttered, already hesitant. “Talk about your relationship, if you feel comfortable.”
Kelly shot back in her seat looking legitimately startled by the question, blinking several times and seemingly glancing toward someone off-camera. Hager kept talking, bringing up a post Kelly shared for Reynolds’s birthday back in July, in which she said he “healed wounds in me he did not inflict.” Hager said that message was “beautiful.”
“Yeah, it is beautiful,” Kelly said. “I’m very lucky. He’s a really good guy.” To which Hager replied, “Awesome.” They all sat quietly for a beat before Hager laughed and said, “Sounds like you don’t want to talk about it. That’s fine.”
Munn saved the day by bringing up how much she loves Reynolds, whom she worked with when starring in the video for Imagine Dragons’ “Cutthroat” in 2021. “He was so kind, I loved the whole band,” she said, clearing the path for Kelly to direct the conversation back to Champagne Problems. “There’s something sort of similar to the movie in the theme of love sort of hits you when you least expect it,” she told the hosts, who enthusiastically agreed with her.
While this whole exchange seems like it was uncomfortable for everyone involved, it’s kind of a net positive for Kelly. Before today, I did not know that she had a Christmas-themed rom-com coming out (I will be watching), nor did I realize that she has been dating Mr. Imagine Dragons since 2022. So, in terms of Minka Kelly brand awareness, this was a huge win.
