Coronation Street fans think there is ‘more to it’ as they try and figure out who Roy Cropper’s new ‘prison pen pal’ is.
Those who follow the ITV soap have a very big interest in the beloved cafe owner, who has been portrayed by actor David Neilson since 1995.
At the time, Roy started out living in the Crimea Street flats alongside fellow tenant Deirdre Barlow. He ended up working at Jim’s Café in Rosamund Street.
But after a year, Roy bought Alma Baldwin’s majority share of the business and renamed it Roy’s Rolls, as it still remains today. Roy was initially a ‘secondary character’, but was given a more prominent role in 1997.
Roy has since been featured in numerous high-profile storylines, most notably marrying the first transgender character in a British soap opera, Hayley Patterson, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, and more recently being put behind bars for a murder he didn’t commit.
Now, in Wednesday’s (November 19) episode of Corrie, Roy has been seen sparking a mystery once again, this time over his new pen pal.
Having clocked that he was anxiously awaiting a delivery, Roy revealed to his nieces, Nina Lucas that he was hoping that something would arrive from his new pen pal.
Of course, she was intrigued to find out who he was writing to and Roy revealed how he has signed up to an organisation that arranges pen pals for lonely prisoners, before rushing down to the postbox to send off his latest letter.

Later, Nina headed downstairs to see her friend Summer Spellman out, and they were both surprised to find Roy drafting another note, but he wouldn’t reveal who he was in fact writing to.
Taking to Reddit, samusek2 questioned: “Who is Roy writing to? Is it a new or existing character? Is it an existing Emmerdale character tying into the big crossover? Will this supposed person join Coronation Street? What is everybody’s opinion on who Roy is corresponding with?”
nostalgic_muffin replied: “Yeah I’m baffled by this one too, and whether it’s leading to something sinister / dramatic, or something good….” julialoveslush asked: “One of Mason’s brothers?” to which Northernplace89 suggested: “I’m thinking this , to find more info out on Becky.”
Over on X (formerly Twitter), @Louise101050 shared: “Roy being penpals with 3 prisoners is there more to it? Is he trying to find out information regarding Becky? Is it completely innocent and there’s nothing to worry about? Is Roy going to be in danger? #corrie #swarla.” @Billiejean5859 added: “Surely it’s something to do with Becky of not it’s a massive coincidence I suppose it will all come out next few months.”
