In a troubling case that highlights the challenges of the criminal justice system, Fiona Malone, a Post Office owner in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, expressed her frustration over the delays involved in prosecuting a shoplifter who targeted her store. Malone reported that she had to endure a five-month wait for sentencing despite having caught the thief in the act.
The incident occurred in August of last year when Natalie Lintern was filmed by security cameras stealing various items, including pre-mixed vodka cans, sandwiches, and cake. Malone, witnessing the theft firsthand, confronted the 36-year-old and pursued her down the street, successfully retrieving the stolen goods before alerting the police.
“The whole criminal justice system is too slow, it’s bureaucratic,” Malone shared in an interview with the BBC. She emphasized the need for swift action against offenders and advocated for alternative punishments to deter repeat offenses.
In January, Lintern, a resident of Pembroke, pleaded guilty to stealing from the Tenby Post Office and several other retailers between April and September of 2024. She was sentenced to a 12-month community order, a decision that would soon prove ineffective as Lintern resumed her shoplifting activities.

Just six months later, she found herself back in court, where she admitted to another theft from a service station that transpired in May. This time, she received a six-week jail sentence, which was suspended for a year, raising questions about the effectiveness of the penalties being imposed on repeat offenders.
Malone’s experience sheds light on broader issues within the justice system, particularly the perceived lack of timely responses to crimes like shoplifting, which can have significant emotional and financial impacts on small business owners. Many in the community are advocating for reforms that could lead to quicker resolutions and more effective deterrents to prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.
