‘One of the greatest of all time’: Ric Flair, Jim Ross lead tributes for iconic wrestling figure dead at 95

Legendary pro wrestling announcer Bob Caudle has died at the age of 95.

An iconic figure during the 1970s and 1980s boom period, Caudle was the voice of NWA’s Mid-Atlantic Championship territory and the famous Jim Crockett Promotions.

He was also a major part of the early WCW programming after Ted Turner’s takeover in the late ’80s, featuring on major events such as Starrcade and Clash of the Champions.

Into the 1990s, Caudle began working for Jim Cornette’s Smoky Mountain Wrestling promotion and remained part of NWA reunion shows throughout the 2000s.

His last appearance, although pre-recorded, came during Ric Flair’s last match in 2022.

Flair led the tributes for Caudle via social media on Monday morning (AEDT) after the news of his death was confirmed by the NWA.

“Bob Caudle was a great friend and someone who helped me develop my interview skills,” the legendary Flair said via X.

“You were a great man Bob and you will be remembered forever as one of the greatest announcers of all time. I cherish all the time that I got to spend with you.

“Rest in peace my dear friend.”

Jim Ross – the consensus greatest play-by-play caller in wrestling history – also shared a tribute to Caudle on social media.

“I’m so sad to hear of Bob Caudle’s passing,” Ross said.

“He was a wonderful man and a great broadcaster. Loved him.”

Caudle’s time spent in the Carolinas region saw him help launch the careers of not only Flair, but many of the wrestling industry’s biggest stars.

He is survived by his three children, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
