Nintendo Recruited “Impossible” Switch Port Studio To Handle Some Of Its Biggest Switch 2 Updates

Nintendo can be quite coy when it comes to revealing which studios worked on its games, sometimes keeping that information under wraps until we go into the credits and find it ourselves. When it comes to some of its Switch 2 updates, it has gone a step beyond that, as almost six months later, we’ve just discovered Panic Button helped make some of them happen.

It would appear Panic Button has finally been given the all clear by Nintendo to tell the world that it helped make some of the original Switch’s biggest third-party games make the jump from the old console to the Switch 2 via their free updates. The studio confirmed as much on Twitter this morning, revealing some of the Switch 2 updates it worked on, including the free one Nintendo rolled out for Super Mario Odyssey on the current-gen console’s launch day.

Nintendo is continuing its form of updating older Switch games.

Panic Button’s Stellar Switch Work Continues On Switch 2

“Nintendo asked us to help demonstrate new capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2 system, while remaining faithful to the original games,” Panic Button revealed. It attached an image of the games it helped bring up to Switch 2 standards, including Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Arms, all of which were given visual upgrades and framerate boosts, among other things, on the Switch 2.

This reveal might not seem like a big deal on the surface, but it is for a couple of reasons. For starters, Nintendo trusting Panic Button not only with its first-party games, but with its first-party Mario games, is very surprising. Particularly Odyssey, a game a lot of people would have fired up immediately upon receiving their Switch 2 to see how much better it looked on the new hardware.

It’s also Nintendo acknowledging the hard work Panic Button put in to bring some big games to the original Switch. The studio managed to get so many demanding third-party games running well on Switch that it became known for “impossible” ports. Doom Eternal, Apex Legends, Rocket League, and Subnautica are all Switch games thanks to Panic Button’s port magic.

Panic Button hasn’t mentioned whether it will continue to work with Nintendo, but you’d have to think it will be the go-to for bringing games to Switch 2 between the work it has done on these updates and the games it got running on the original Switch. Top of the wishlist right now appears to be Switch 2 upgrades for the Xenoblade Chronicles games. Amid a sea of updates during the Switch 2’s first six months, somehow, none of the Xenoblade games have been given official upgrades.
