An “absolutely perfect” Netflix series has made a triumphant return with a second season that fans are describing as an “easy binge.”
A Man On The Inside first premiered on the streaming giant last year and quickly garnered critical acclaim, becoming a hit with both critics and viewers. The plot revolves around a retired professor who finds a new purpose in life when he’s hired by a private investigator to go undercover in a San Francisco retirement home.
The creative genius behind the series is Mike Schur, who brought us The Office, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine Nine and The Good Place. Schur drew inspiration for the show from the documentary The Mole Agent, which tells the true story of a retiree who goes undercover in a nursing home to investigate potential abuse.

In the second season, protagonist Charles Nieuwendyk (played by Ted Danson) is itching to take on another major undercover assignment, reports the Mirror His opportunity finally arrives when a mysterious blackmailer targets Jack Berenger, the president of Wheeler College (portrayed by Max Greenfield).
The college recruits Charles to go undercover as a professor as he tries to figure out who’s been making the threats. Could it be related to Brad Vinick, the iconoclastic billionaire and Wheeler graduate (played by Gary Cole), and his proposed donation to the school?

Charles encounters a plethora of potential suspects, but his focus is sidetracked by Mona (Mary Steenburgen), a free-spirited music teacher whose passion for life stirs up emotions he thought he’d buried after his wife’s death. Is he ready to open his heart again at this stage in his life? And more importantly, has he fallen for the very criminal he’s been sent to unmask?
Meanwhile, PI Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada) embarks on her own journey of growth as she reconnects with an important figure from her past. While the setting for Season 2 moves away from the care home, plenty of familiar faces make a welcome return and new characters arrive as if they had always belonged (such as a regularly scene-stealing Jason Mantzoukas).
The debut season earned an impressive 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and critics and viewers were full of praise for the show last time around. One review claimed, “A Man On The Inside is a feel-good show with feel-good characters that is an enjoyable and easy binge. I look forward to returning to this series for a second season and more.”
